Welcome to the Travel Somerset website
This service by Somerset County Council aims to provide reliable and up-to-date information about roads across Somerset to help you make informed choices about your journey.
On this website you will find our map showing current and future roadworks as well as live updates on accidents and other incidents which may cause delays.
You will also find links to various other helpful travel information – from rail and buses, to walking and cycling.
Our information comes from a wide range of sources, from our own highways teams and traffic cameras, to third parties like Inrix, the emergency services and utility firms.
We do our very best to make sure the information provided is accurate, but it is not exhaustive and should never be completely relied upon.
With 4,200+ miles of road in Somerset, there’s a lot to keep an eye on and some things we simply don’t know about.
To improve and encourage the sharing of information, we have a dedicated Twitter account – @TravelSomerset. We tweet live traffic and roadworks information all year round and also post forecasts and road updates from our gritting teams in winter.
If you spot a problem which we’re not reporting, you can let us know by sending us a tweet (if it’s safe to do). We usually monitor Twitter from 7am to 7pm Monday to Friday (except bank holidays) and read all messages when we can, although we cannot reply to every tweet especially at busy times.
We’re also unable to formally act upon reports of problems such as potholes or complaints via tweets. If you do contact us to report issues like this we will try to signpost you to the relevant form on our website. Doing it this way means your report is sent immediately to the correct department to be dealt with, so will hopefully lead to a quicker resolution.
Twitter is a great platform for sharing travel updates, but please bear in mind that @TravelSomerset is not continuously monitored and may not be the most appropriate way to contact us, especially in an emergency.
If you need a response or your enquiry is urgent, find out how to get in touch via our Highway Area Offices page. You can also find out more about other highways services by clicking here; it takes you to our highways dashboard on the Council website.
