Structural Maintenance

Structural Maintenance

Our structural maintenance programme includes all planned work to maintain and improve the condition of Somerset County Council’s highway assets.

Schemes are identified by assessing the condition of the highway and its assets, and developing programmes of work to address those areas most in need of investment.

Structural maintenance covers many different types of asset including carriageways, footways, drainage, earthworks and embankments.

The programme represents one of the biggest areas of expenditure in highways – typically £20m each year. Investment decisions are largely data driven as part of a strategic asset management plan.

Planned work for 2018/19

All roads due to have structural maintenance this financial year can be seen on the following maps.

Mendip Stuctural Maintenance 2018

Sedgemoor Stuctural Maintenance 2018

South Somerset Stuctural Maintenance 2018

Taunton Deane Stuctural Maintenance 2018

West Somerset Stuctural Maintenance 2018

You can also find definitions of the different types of work and locations in list form below.

Principal resurfacing This list shows all planned resurfacing schemes on our principal road network – A Class roads. These works traditionally involve overlaying or inlaying large areas of carriageway and carrying out deeper reconstruction if significant structural failure is evident. Coring investigation work takes place beforehand to fully assess the work required.

To keep road users and the workforce safe, this type of work usually requires a road closure, which will be planned for off-peak times and around other works and events to minimise disruption.

We also carry out an extensive surface dressing programme each year.

Drainage: This list shows all planned drainage improvement schemes. Drainage work usually involves replacing or repairing pipework, gullies, drains or culverts to improve the capture, containment and flow of water and keep  it away from the road’s structure. Water ingress is a major cause of damage to the highway, causing cracks and potholes, so this type of work is essential to prevent the deterioration of our roads.

FAQs

When does the work take place?

Annual programmes are developed and works take place throughout the year. All the schemes listed on this page are planned to take place this financial year and details were correct as of August 2018, although the programme is subject to change. When dates for each scheme are proposed we will add to the searchable map on our roadworks page. We will also signpost in advance on site.

How long will the work take?

Due to vast range of variables involved in highway maintenance, the duration of a scheme is determined on a site by site basis. We recognise the potential for disruption and make every effort to plan and execute each scheme in a manner that minimises the inconvenience to the public.

Will the road need to be closed?

We always aim to minimise disruption but our top priority is to keep both road users and the public safe. Therefore, many roadworks schemes will require a road closure, temporary traffic lights or other means of traffic management. When details are known we will add to the searchable map on our roadworks page. We will also signpost in advance on site.
