Rail fares vary considerably, even for the same journey. Buying tickets at the station just before you travel is usually the most expensive option. You can often cut the cost of your fares significantly by comparing fares online using services such as nationalrail.co.uk, thetrainline.com or raileasy.co.uk.
You could also cut the cost of travel by looking at railcard options or by:
- Buying tickets in advance
- Travelling off peak
- Checking both single and return fares
- Looking for special tickets and special offers
- Looking for discounts for business travel and bulk bookings
You can also use the Tickety Split mobile app to help search for savings by split ticketing. It’s easy to use, simply enter your start and end stations and date of travel. It is currently only available for walk-up fares rather than advance ticket purchases.
